Last Friday vs. Next Friday

By The Hillbilly Dude | Published

Y’all ever try to make plans with hillbillies and get tangled up over which Friday somebody’s talkin’ about?

You ain't alone.

Because "last Friday," "this past Friday," "this coming Friday," and "next Friday" all have distinct meanings that don’t always match up with what unhillbillies know to be true. In the South, "this Friday" or "this coming Friday" means the one comin’ up. This week.

"Next Friday" means the one after THIS Friday - a whole week later.

And "last Friday" - you mean yesterday? That's "this past Friday." Last Friday was more than a week ago.

Sounds simple enough, but it’ll flat-out bumfuzzle some plans if you ain’t careful. Here's a quick chart for reference:

The Friday Breakdown

  • Last Friday - Usually does NOT mean the last Friday we just had. Means Friday week ago.
  • This Past Friday - This is the Friday that most recently happened.
  • This Coming Friday or This Friday - The Friday coming up this week.
  • Next Friday - In much of the South, this means the Friday after the one coming up - not the immediate one.

What Should You Do?

Well. Way I see it, either:

  1. Print this highly valuable information, use scissors to cut out the important part, and then hide it in a safe place.
  2. Bookmark this page and give a name like 'IMPORTANT!' or 'WATCH OUT!!!'
  3. Don't do anything diffurnt and see how the experiment turns out.
