Git ’Er Done!

Git ’er done! means "get it finished" or "just do the job already." Despite its country flavor, it is not originally Southern or Appalachian. The phrase was created and popularized by comedian Larry the Cable Guy as part of his stage persona.

Origin

The phrase "git ’er done" was coined and made famous by comedian Larry the Cable Guy (Daniel Whitney) during the early 2000s Blue Collar Comedy era. His stage persona used an exaggerated rural Southern character, and the catchphrase spread rapidly through stand-up specials, merchandise, and pop-culture quoting. Although many people assume it is traditional Southern slang, there is no evidence of the phrase in regional dialect before the comedian introduced it. Its popularity comes entirely from entertainment, not from authentic Southern or Appalachian speech.

Verdict: Southernish. A modern pop-culture catchphrase built to sound Southern but not historically linked to real Southern dialect.

Notes

  • Most speakers use it jokingly, knowingly referencing Larry the Cable Guy.
  • Its "Southern sound" comes from the comedic persona, not from genuine regional usage.
  • Rarely used earnestly; almost always playful or ironic.
  • Often misunderstood as a traditional Southern saying because of its rural stylization.
