Hit the Dusty Trail
Hit the dusty trail means to leave, head out, or get going. Though it sounds Southern today, the phrase comes from Old West slang and cowboy imagery, not Southern or Appalachian dialect.

Origin
The phrase developed in Old West and frontier talk in the late 1800s, tied to horseback travel and cattle drives on dry, dusty roads. It became popular nationwide through Western novels and Hollywood films.
